Beginning question: How did I become successful?
Russian school for math; advocate for educational reform;mom=special ed. Teacher
BUT don’t feel prepared for what’s beyond; see it more in math; so test-based; CI;
where’s the process of discovery in math?
Artifact #1: Poll to juniors and seniors; how prepared do you feel? For teachers and students;
Essay: persuasive essay
Want to bring in neurology and brain-connections;anatomy project
Artifacts vs. dirt
Presentation: clarity and big picture

01-30-12
Future plans: ideas
Looking at sources to interview

02-06-12
TED talks:

Steven Johnson
math teacher
found a book in anatomy teacher’s room
still in info.-processing mode
Finding the focus; striking that balance between schoolwork and SYP
Finding what’s driving your research
Focus project around math.
No more manual for students
What’s going to be the project? Maybe a video compilation in all of the classes Laurie visited? Creating blogs for students and teachers to talk about their experiences honestly; Juniors/ seniors
Possible focus: Why is math so inaccessible when it and science are the most universal topics?
Start keeping list of possible focuses

02-09-12
Chinosi:
Check out Gladwell- Blink, Tipping Point, Nudge: choice architecture, autonomy, create environment where everything student chooses is a win:win (inside the curriculum)
Daniel pink -Drive
Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose
- hard-driven to be self- directed
Maximise the classroom: grade is not a purpose-- the A is subjective
CIA: 3 things that either happen right or do not happen
3Ds: flip CIA and design a new system-- what is the need (solid and transcendent)
Differential instructions: very difficult but when it works, it works, can test, play and compare methods

- Compare multiple teachers, potentially in city schools and grade levels

2-13-12
IRT this week: science of aging; present tomorrow
Annotated artifacts handed in Friday:
        Steven Johnson
        Sir Ken Robinson
        Diane Ravitch
Learn to skim! Skimming is your friend.
Changed focus:
Change in both students and teachers on opportunities for learning
Start-up program with custom team; opportunity to create classes with   independence—WHAT TYPE OF AUTONOMY DO YOU WANT?
Teachers who give students the space to explore.
Research and start thinking about writing.
Project: collection of research. Multimedia display of research.

3-2-12
Topic: fast-fix society; SIRI-get answers fast; goes against what education is about; education  (through math) is all about fast-fixes too; classroom has been compromised; why are parents sending their children to private schools/ after-school programs?  What’s missing from public school?
Lit review: work in progress; work through it over the weekend; have it ready for Monday
Hard to figure out where you are; am I behind? Am I ahead?
Project: classroom visits; video archive/ collection
3-7-12
conceptual map building:
What are math teachers doing right? Doing wrong?
        Look at examples of teaching
What’s the relationship between paper, project, and presentation?
Generate list of interview questions/ teachers to interview.
Start the observations. Start the interviews a.s.a.p.

3-19-12

taught a class at Russian school: “a cool experience”; developed discipline system—names and checks on the side; “good incentive system”; worked with student on the spectrum
attended a Simmons class on activity-based teaching techniques; saw video on activity-based math teacher
How to make sense of all of these ideas? (“Why aren’t you doing it?”)
Tutor a student as well
Maybe a fourth-term independent study with a friend
Test the research with the reality of what’s going on in the classroom
Combo overview of research/ evaluation of what’s working and what isn’t
Post outline soon; get started on the rough draft
